Tattoo Removal

Liberate Your Skin from Unwanted Ink!

Why would you need a tattoo removed?

In 2022, the EU estimated that 12% of Europeans have at least one tattoo, a number that could be almost doubled amongst the younger population. Tattoos can be a beautiful expression of identity, artistry and/or culture or religion, much like how we express ourselves through our clothes or hobbies. However, as we grow and change, our perspectives and how we express and present ourselves may shift potentially leaving us with something that we resent being on our bodies. Tattoo removal isn’t always everyone’s first port of call, many people choose to evolve into a new version of themselves by simply covering over the unwanted ink with something fresh and different. If you’re looking for an entirely clean slate or fresh canvas, tattoo removal offers a path to embrace your evolving self. Experience the freedom of shedding unwanted ink and rediscovering the natural beauty of your skin. With advanced techniques, your tattoo can fade into a distant memory, allowing your true self to shine through. Embrace your evolution, liberate your skin, and embark on a journey of self-renewal and self-expression.

Tattoo removal can be achieved in a variety of ways ranging from dermabrasion, laser treatments, surgical excision, chemical peels and more.

Laser is the most popular way to remove unwanted ink. Unlike other treatments, laser tattoo removal uses highly concentrated light waves to target the ink particles within the skin causing them to break up. These smaller particles are then eliminated by the body’s immune system. The healing process after laser tattoo removal is minimal and patients should expect the area to be healed after just a few days. It is important to note that the ease and timeliness of the healing process is subject to the size and colour of the tattoo and other factor related to each case or patient.

Other tattoo removal treatments tend to be more invasive, inflicting more pain on the patient resulting in a longer recovery period.

Tattoo Removal Alternatives

  • Dermabrasion – Dermabrasion involves the process of sloughing away the top layers of the skin to remove the pigment thus encouraging new skin to grow. Such a procedure is painful so sometimes local, regional or even general anaesthetic is necessary. The skin is also at high risk of scarring after such a procedure.
  • Excision – This procedure involves the direct surgical removal of the skin containing the tattoo. This procedure is more appropriate for small tattoos rather than larger tattooed areas as the treatment may leave some scarring.
  • Cryosurgery – Cryosurgery involves the freezing of the tattoo with liquid nitrogen and the sanding off of those layers of skin.
  • Chemical peels and Tattoo Creams – To remove tattoos chemically, a mild acid called ‘Trichloroacetic acid [TCA] is used which strips the different layers of skin where the pigment is situated.
  • P.L. (Intense Pulsed Light) – Similar to laser removal treatments, I.P.L treatments directs a beam of light onto the skin which damages the ink.

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQs

Does tattoo laser removal hurt?

Your laser removal treatment will feel very similar to your original tattoo session. Your provider may offer numbing cream to minimise any possible discomfort throughout the treatment. This takes about 30 minutes to take effect. Your skin will also feel tender after your appointment but not to the point that pain medication is required.

How long are treatments?

Treating an average-sized tattoo typically takes around 10 minutes. Treatments can be longer depending on the size of the tattoo being treated. Treating multiple tattoos will also take longer.

How many treatments are needed?

A series of treatments is typically recommended. The number of treatments needed is dependent on variables such as ink type, size of the tattoo, location on the body, lifestyle habits, etc. Your provider can provide you with a better idea of the number of treatments required during your consultation.

Is laser tattoo removal right for me?

Cynosure’s laser systems are ideal for all skin types. However, certain ink pigments are more difficult to treat than others. This is one of the reasons why a consultation is required prior to treatment. Your practitioner can also advise you on whether there are any medical concerns, medications or supplements that could affect your results.

How much does this procedure usually cost?

The cost of laser tattoo removal will be different for everyone. The size and number of tattoos, as well as how difficult it is to remove, all need to be taken into account. This will be discussed with you during your consultation.

How to prepare for laser tattoo removal?

There are a few things you can do to better prepare for your treatment. It’s important to protect the treated area from harmful UV rays. This means no tanning, whether naturally or with a tanning bed, at least two weeks before your session. It’s also highly recommended that you stop smoking to promote better healing. Certain medications that increase the risk of bleeding and bruising should also be avoided. Always show up to your session hydrated.

Does this procedure leave patients with scarring?

Laser tattoo removal will not leave you with scarring. However, this is only if the necessary aftercare instructions are followed. If you are prone to keloid scarring, you should mention this to your provider during your consultation. You’re at higher risk of scarring if you’ve developed keloid scars in the past but there are steps that can be taken to minimise the risks.

Is there a chance my tattoo won’t be completely removed?

While certain colours can be slightly harder to remove than others, patients will almost always be able to remove most of their tattoo. Aged tattoos and any body art that’s present on very thin or thick skin can be more difficult to remove. In some instances, a very light shadow of the former tattoo can be seen but this will also fade gradually over the years.

What can I expect during my tattoo removal treatment?

After undergoing the treatment, you may experience temporary redness and swelling at the treatment site, which typically subsides within a few days. It is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider to discuss potential side effects and the necessary post-treatment care. In general, patients start noticing positive outcomes after 3-7 treatments, although the ideal number of sessions can vary. It is important to note that the effectiveness of this treatment is dependent on the size, colour and age of the tattoo, among other factors. More sessions may be needed for larger, more dense ink treatment areas.

It is recommended to collaborate with your provider to develop a personalised treatment plan that suits your specific needs. The duration of each session can be as short as 5-10 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
