How Sun Damage Laser Treatments Work

Prior to undergoing any type of skin laser treatment, a consultation needs to be scheduled with a qualification practitioner. Your goals, medical history and skin will be evaluated before a custom treatment plan is developed.

During treatment, a specialised applicator will be applied to the damaged area of the skin. The energy from the laser is absorbed by the damaged skin cells, with the heat destroying the cells. The body will naturally eliminate the damaged cells while also increasing the production of collagen. This increase in collagen will naturally rejuvenate the skin to reveal clearer, more beautiful-looking skin.

Any areas where sun damage can occur can be treated with laser technology, including the face, hands, chest and back.

Since this is a non-invasive procedure, patients are free to resume their usual activities directly after treatment. The average treatment only takes about 20 minutes to complete so it can easily be scheduled over your lunch hour.

Sun Damage Laser Treatment FAQs

What types of pigment can be treated?

Laser light treatment is appropriate for treating age spots, sun damage, and freckles on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Your provider will tell you more about what can be achieved with Cynosure’s laser technology during your consultation.

What results can I expect after a laser treatment for sun damage?

Patients can expect to see a decrease in the appearance of unwanted pigment in the treated area. However, results develop gradually after several sessions, so patience will be required.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, only a few treatments are needed. However, this is dependant on the condition of your skin and several other factors. You will need to work with a professional cosmetic practitioner to determine how many laser treatments are required in your unique case.

What can I expect following a laser treatment for sun damage?

Most patients will experience a sensation that’s similar to sunburn directly after their treatment and for a day or two thereafter. The treated area will also be pink or red in colour for up to eight hours. A cold compress can be used to alleviate any redness and swelling. Patients should avoid the application of makeup or creams for at least a day or until most of the redness and stinging has subsided. Your provider will tell you what you need to know about possible side effects during your consultation. You will also receive specific aftercare instructions that will help you achieve the best results.

Is there any downtime?

For most patients there is no downtime, allowing you to return to your normal activities immediately after. It will be necessary to protect your skin from direct sun exposure though. Not only is your skin more sensitive following laser treatments but sunburned skin can’t be treated. This means you would need to delay upcoming appointments.

How should I prepare for my laser treatment for sun damage?

Prior to your Cynosure laser treatment, sunbathing and tanning beds should be avoided for at least two weeks. The same applies to waxing and cosmetic procedures such as peels and cosmetic injections. Avoid using any products that could irritate the skin on the affected area before and directly after your treatment. Any medications and supplements that could thin your blood and cause excess bruising and bleeding should also be avoided. This includes anti-inflammatory medications and herbal supplements.

Will the treatments be painful?

Patients say that treatments feel similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin, while others describe it has a heating sensation. An anaesthetic is not generally required because Cynosure’s systems have built-in cooling that makes treatments more comfortable. If you are concerned about discomfort, you can speak to your provider about an anaesthetic.

Are there any side effects associated with sun damage laser treatments?

Over and above the mild redness and swelling that will occur after treatment, patients may experience some itching too. Infection is always a possibility but not if the skin is cared for correctly after treatments.
